Ninja Ranks: After becoming a Ninja, there are four ranks that are attainable by Ninja: Genin, Chunin and Jonin. The fourth is Kage, which is only held by the strongest Ninja in the village.
Academy Student* The academy is where would-be ninja start; they are not actually considered ninja until they graduate. Academy students take formal and practical tests of all sorts and are taught basic ninja skills, such as martial arts, techniques, physical fitness and the way of the ninja. Basic weapon usage, such as kunai and shuriken, is commonly taught. Elementary ninja techniques, though they vary from village to village, are also taught.
Rank Attained by: Entering the Academy
Average Age: 8+
Genin: (Low Ninja) Genin is the weakest and default rank for all Ninja starting out. Genin literally means Low-Ninja. These Ninja are inexperienced and watched over by Jonin.
Rank Attained by: Passing of the Academy Exams
Average Age: 12+
Chunin: (Middle Ninja) Chunin is the next step up from Genin. Chunin are skilled Ninja that have usually been so for a while. Once a Chunin, the Ninja can perform missions as an individual.
Rank Attained by: Appointment by Village Leader Passing of the Chunin Exams

Jonin: (High Ninja) Jonin is the highest rank under Kage. Jonin are very skilled Ninja that are known as the most powerful, or, the elite of their village, they're skilled and are capable of a lot of things. There is also Tokubetsu (or Special) Jonin, sometimes called Tokujonin. These are Jonin that specialize in a specific field. Such as interrogation or psychology.
Rank Attained by: Appointment by Village Leader
Average Age: None. Rarely do Chunin ascend to the rank of Jonin. (Note: Most younger Jonin are Tokubetsu Jonin, and with more experience, become full fledged, well rounded Jonin.)
Kage: (Shadow) Kage is the rank held by the strongest Ninja in the five main villages of Iwa, Suna, Konoha, Kumo and Kiri. Kage is the village leader who oversees everything from appointing sensei to village tactics.

Ninja Positions: Positions are held by Chunin and Jonin-level Ninja. Positions are the occupations of Ninja that include; ANBU, Oinin (Hunter-Nin, Chaser-Nin), and other occupations such as Academy Teachers and Couriers. I will list the more important positions.

ANBU: (Dark Side/Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai) ANBU are specialist in assassination and prevention of assassination. They usually operate in the shadows and not out in the open like most Ninja do. They operate under codename, and are not allowed to reveal their real names when on-duty. They wear masks that resemble animals to contain their identities.
Oinin: (Hunter-Ninja) Oinin are specialist in tracking, they're hunters of Nukenin, traitors of their respective Villages. Much like ANBU they wear masks to hide their identities, but not in the shape of animals, but flat masks that hold their country and village symbols.

Iryō-nin: (Medic-Ninja) Ninja that specialize in the healing arts, using Ninjutsu to help people in need.
