"Is that so?"
The voice that spoke was that of a man, one still in his prime. It was very calm and seemingly well at eased, but at the same time it carried a seriousness to it. There was no harshness laced into the words, no glint of anger, no ill will hidden within them.
"H-hai, Tairō1..."
This voice, that of a young female, was much less comfortable. It was clear that whoever it belonged to was very nervous. Apparently, she had been the unwilling bearer of bad news. Seemingly fearing how her leader would take the news her voice remained hushed and muffled as she avoided his gaze.
A sigh followed by the sound of a porcelain cup being placed on a wooden table rung in the room. The man looked down at the steaming cup for a moment before redirecting his dark brown eyes to the woman before him. She had teal colored hair, though in this age it's hard to tell whether it was her true hair color or not, and her eyes were the same. Her body was slender and lean, a body type that was perfect for stealth and infiltration. Dressed in dark blue kimono she kept her hair in a bun, and she kept glancing down at her teacup.
"So what do you intent to do?" he asked her, his tone remaining calm. Raising his teacup to his mouth he took a sip of the warm tea. As he did so his eyes narrowed ever so slightly on the woman, a subtle sign of his anticipation of her response. An idea of what was already in motion, but he simply wanted verbal confirmation.
"W-well, there has been a recovery team dispa--" she said before finding herself interupted by the man's raised hand. Blinking a few times she tried to grasp the meaning of it, but dropped all thought of the intrusion as the man shook his head. Realizing that she was making eye contact with her superior she quickly lowered her gaze once again.
"That won't be neccesary," he said shortly after interupting her. "This isn't a situation that requires so much effort. Based on what you've told me I know what she's after, so I'll take care of it myself. Also, the team's movements would attract unwanted attention." With that he took another sip of his tea before placing it back on the table. Taking a pause his serious expression became more calm and a smile formed on his face. "Well, that's enough of that. You've barely drank any of your tea. Is it the hōjicha2? Too strong? I could get you something else if you prefer. Genmaicha3? Matcha4? Gyokuro5 perhaps?"
The woman's eyes widened a little at the man's sudden change. Looking up at him for a moment she studdered in an attempt to grasp what had just happened. "N-no. It's nothing like that," she said as she picked up her teacup. Taking a sip of it she gave him an uneasy smile before setting it back down on the table. "It's good, but...is this really okay? You're my superior. Meeting like this...isn't it against the rules?" she asked, concern was written all over her face.
A chuckle came from the man at her words. "There is nothing wrong with an officer having a conversation with his subordinates off-duty. Though, I must say that I'd never expect you to be this shy. Especially after seeing you fight," he said before finishing off his tea. Slowly he arose from the mattress, revealing his dark brown kimono. "But, I suppose I should be off now." With that he walked over to the door of the private room he had reserved in the teahouse, and slide it open. Taking a step over the frame he stopped to look over his shoulder at the woman. "Oh, Hattori-san6, you should try wearing a kimono more often. They look good on you," and with that he walked out of the room, only catching a brief glimpse of the blush that had formed on her cheeks, and closed the sliding door behind him.
Walking down the wooden hallway of the building a devious smirk had replaced the warm smile that had been present on his face. "Kagemiya Shion...," he said to himself as he exited the building and stepped into the daylight sun. "Looks like things'll start getting interesting soon enough..."TO BE CONTINUED...
