we were younger back then...
A grimace. He plucked the photo from it's frame, sliding it from behind the stand with pinched digits. Daybreak was upon his window, the hot desert sun was only hours away from being upon the village of Sunagakure. He held the picture up to the light, taking a glance at a man who wore shades similar to his. If one were to look close, one would notice that they were the same exact pair, and next to him was a much shorter boy who he held close. Kinyōji smirked at the picture, he was the smaller one, while the taller young man with the shades was his elder brother who he loved more than the world itself.
He brushed his thumb's fingernail against his bottom lip nervously, folding the picture which had a love letter written on the back in two before slipping it into his kimono. He slipped the shades on, fixing them on his ears, making sure the bridge was placed correctly on his nose. He stood, the clicking of his wooden sandals on the planks of woods below was all that adorned the small apartment.
The front door slid open, and he stepped out into the sandy streets that were baron this early in the morning save for a number of ninja that regularly patrolled the inner perimeter of the village. He started walking up the road, headed toward the walls that surrounded the village with a frown, seemingly down about leaving.

...without a care in the world...
"Hey!"
Just as soon as he would have stepped out, slender hands would slide around him and up under his sunglasses to gently cover his eyes. Tsuya, clad in ninja gear, snickered lightly as she had once again caught the golden boy by surprise. She knew he'd know it was her by now, because he was never quick enough to escape her grasp. "Guess who?"
Then, yet another voice came behind her, giggling lightly. This second girl was slightly taller, long strawberry blonde locks swiftly blowing behind her in the hot, sandy breeze passing by them. She was in her normal everyday attire, a short blue dress to match her eyes with a cream colored sunhat trimmed with a blue and pink bow. The morning sun beamed down on the three. "You know he can't tell."

The gentle touch of slender fingers creeping under his bubble-eyed shades, slipping over his eyes and blinding him. His body jolted, first with fear that he were under attack, then he relaxed some when he recognized that there was only one person who could effectively sneak up on him, but Kinyōji loved to play stupid, especially when it made him look like a ladies man.
"Ah...I'm not sure...your fingers feel like my Monday but your voice sounds more like Saturday." He stroked the flimsy stubble that was growing on his chin that he was so proud of, the sound of his skin scraping against the short hair as he scratched across it could be heard. He joked, it was obvious, there weren't many girls that were willing to touch Kinyōji with a ten foot stick. His face became warmer as he heard her voice speak out, he instinctively turned his head, even while his gaze was covered, he did so and didn't understand why. He spent so much time just watching her, it became second nature. His nose twitched, her scent rushed to the back of his nostrils and made him weak in the knees.
"Ehehe...Mei-Mei..." He chuckled stupidly like the loser he was, completely forgetting about what he was planning on doing before the sudden arrival of the only two friends he had in his life. Kind of ironic how he couldn't find a girlfriend, yet he hung out with two all the time.

"ENNNNNNNNH! WRONG!" Tsuya buzzed, pulling her hands from his eyes and folding her arms angrily in front of her. "I'm not Mei-chan! You think you'd know that by now, loser face." The honey brown girl mushed a finger in the side of his head, then turned and marched over to Kyomei's side. Tsuya didn't have many female friends. Heck, she didn't have many friends in general, outside of her two teammates. Kyomei and Kinyoji were the only other two.
"I told you. He can't tell if he's coming or going half the time. How did you expect him to tell your voice from mine?" She smiled warmly at Kinyoji as she spoke, a hint of playfulness coating her tongue like honey. "Where are you headed so early?" She asked, tilting her head slightly in an innocent bewilderment, fingers laced behind her. "I've never seen you out of bed before noon unless you had a mission. And even then, I'd have to drag your arse out of bed and through the window. Literally."
She walked over to him, now only a few feet away, her smile radiating like the sun that was so hot above them from the shade of her bonnet. Tsuya yawned, covering her mouth. "Yeah, Kin-san. What's really good wit'cha?"

"I didn't--that's not what I meant--that wasn't my final an--!" The befuddled Kinyōji began, he glanced off to the side, his eyes hidden in the darkness of his shades which he promptly began hiding. He was quickly cut off by the women inquiring where he was going so early in the morning, and, well, he didn't know himself, he just knew he had to get out of here. Get out of Suna and defect.
"Ara...I was just..." He tossed the sack he had over his shoulder off to the side close to a pile of garbage. "Taking out my trash...!" The Chūnin chuckled, scratching his neck, his topknot shifting up and down as he did so. He glanced back and forth, his demeanor was shifty, as if he were hiding something, which he obviously was. The bag he threw out wasn't a trash bag and it didn't sound like it had trash stuffed inside, either.
"What...what're you guys doin' around here this early in the morning?" He cleared his throat, trying to get off of the subject of what he was doing and whatnot. "Did you bring Ran-chan with you?" The boy asked with a scoff. Umimaro Ran, the third teammate in Suna Cell 7 under the tutelage of Gurimaro. Once they were certified Chūnin, they were allowed to operate alone without supervision, and they did seeing as how Suna's supplies and funding had been cut dramatically.
Truth was, Ran was the smooth guy who had his head on straight and Kinyōji was a mess, especially after he'd lost his brother. Ran was clean cut, was a skilled ninja, wasn't as hard on the eyes and...well...Kinyōji wasn't much of any of that. Naturally, they had a silent competition over Kyōmei's attention, and Kinyōji was at a point in his life where he felt like the battle was already won, no matter how much he cared for Kyōmei, no matter how much he beat himself up over it. She deserved the best, and Ran was the better of the two.
Right?

Kyoumei shrugged. "Ran-kun is on a mission, I suppose. He left late yesterday afternoon." Kyoumei really didn't pay much attention to their silent rivalry. As dainty as she seemed, she was a true ninja through and through, and the thought of crushes and emotions truly did not phase her. Or so she thought, back then.
"Me and Nui-chan are going to meet the rest of Team 8 for breakfast. You should come, Kin-kun." Kyoumei held out her hand to his. Her smile was as genuine as her words were warm. "Besides, Ginko and Adashino need reinforcements, and without Ran, they're hopeless against us." Kyoumei shoot a glance and a wink to her comrade, who was staring at the "trash bag" curiously.
Tsuya laced her fingers behind her head and blinked. Curiously. Something was amiss...
"Wait, trash? You never do chores of any ki--"

"~any kind before 12:00, I know." His uneasy voice spoke, cutting off Tsuya while he looked at Kyōmei reaching out for his hand which kind of confused him. He arched a brow, blinking wondering what she wanted, slightly lifted his hand and looked at it and hesitantly offer it to have it taken. His face burned a bright red, his heart sunk into his stomach, his eyes staring at their joined hands and for once in so long he didn't feel like a loser. Quite the opposite. It was amazing how much a woman's touch could heal.
"Ah...yeah...breakfast..." He was like a zombie in her grip, he was hers to merely tug around like a lost puppy. He forget ever defecting, at least for now, because right now his life seemed that much brighter. "Wait, you guys know I'm allergic to fish, right? I can't eat fish, especially this early in the morning." Kinyōji ramble with a nervous stammer.

Tsuya pouted when she was cut off by Kinyoji's half assed explanation, but shrugged it off when food was mentioned again. "Ooooh, I want an omelet with riiiice!" she said, pulling Kinyoji's other hand. "C'mon! You're walking tooo slooooow!"
Kyomei chuckled and pulled him at Tsuya's pace with the other hand, and headed to their breakfast rendezvous.
That afternoon... The streets of Suna had become busy with the lunch time crowd, and merchants and restaurateurs were congesting the marketplace. The sun was high and hot now and the dusty wind had died down to nothing more than a few wisps.
Tsuya looped each one of her arms through Adashino and Ginko's, and smiled widely. "Boooyyy, I'm full. Like, seriously, I'm gonna burst..." Ginko's sleepy expression didn't change, but he pulled away slowly, only to be pulled back tightly by Tsuya. Kyoumei pinched Ginko's cheeks. "Where do you think you're going?"
Adashino pushed his glasses up on his nose and groaned. "Well, I'd love to stick around and talk, but I have to get back to the academy. I have my first day of Academy Sensei training today." Ginko nodded, cheeks red from Kyoumei's pinching. "Yeah, and I...uh...need to go for moral support." He never had a way with women, especially not these two. He ran his fingers through his white hair and smiled sheepishly.
"Yeah, suuure." Tsuya picked, unlooping her arms from their's and relooping it with Kyoumei's. "Get outta here."
Adashino shook his head and smiled. "Well, we'll see you guys later. Don't let Tsuya burst on you." Ginko gave a light wave and a "See ya" and followed him off into the crowd.
"Isn't it weird thinking of Adashino as someone's teacher? It's like...just yesterday we were graduating from the academy together. With her thumb and forefinger, Kyomei pinched the brim of her hat and pulled it down to better shade her face.
"I guess. But if any of us could be teachers, it'd be him...hey..." Tsuya responded before looking around curiously. Something was amiss. "Where's Kinyoji?"
Kyoumei looked around at the crowd of people surrounding them. "Maybe he just got lost in the crowd? I mean, this is Kinyoji."
There was no way back then she'd think she'd never see him again...

"Aiyaaaahn~" Kinyōji moaned as he was tugged at a faster pace than the one he was walking in, one of his eyes narrowing, small clouds of dust rode upon his heels as his wooden sandals scuffled in weak resistance to the influence of the women. "Do you know how early it is~? You can't be walkin' all fast when it's this earky!" The Chūnin grumbled as they led him to where they were to have breakfast.
It was a great day, he was just like he was any other day, entertaining everyone at breakfast with his humor, even going as far as to stand on the table and doing a dance while imitating a monkey. The shop owner nearly beat him half to death with the broom, but everything seemed all good.
Suna became it's busiest at noon, and Kinyōji decided that'd be the best time to split from the rest of the group. He just gradually came to a stop and watched everyone continue forward, too busy laughing and enjoying each others conversation to notice that that funny dude had gone missing. He could still spot Kyōmei out in the crowd, staring at her strawberry blond head turning, and for a moment, he wondered if she'd noticed, but it wasn't the time to find out. Ducking low, he submerged himself in the crowd and decided that that the last thing said between them was about the weather, it was best that way.
There was no way that he ever planned on seeing her face again...
Through the narrow crevice that led in and out of Suna he went, luckily his bag wasn't stolen and all he had to do was go and claim it. The sun hit his shades as he began emerging from the slit opening, his head raising, his face to the sun that hung high above.
